A little bit about us...

Liberty Music is a Community Interest Company based in Watford, Hertfordshire.

Our office is above Sanctuary Art of Sound Recording & Rehearsal Studios, an outstanding music facility with eight studios and a vibrant community of musicians.

We are dedicated to sharing the power of music and the benefits music brings to people who may struggle to access professional facilities, tuition, instruments and equipment loan to those who would otherwise face barriers to making music.

At the heart of the organisation is our commitment to deliver the legacy handed to us by Sanctuary Studios and the “Free School of Music” by continuing to offer free and discounted studio facilities, lessons, loan instruments, jam nights and other fundraising events.

Our mission is to do more, to grow and to preserve our legacy. We want to reach out to a wider audience by continuing to offer the trusted and familiar services detailed on our website while engaging with the local community to identify new and exciting funded and income generating projects.

We will also continue to foster relationships with musicians, the music industry and community partners to help us deliver our mission.

Our History...

The seed for what is now Liberty Music CIC, was first planted 2005, when the founder of Sanctuary Art of Sound Ltd, a.k.a Sanctuary Studios, opened the facility for three hours every day, to anyone who wanted to use the studio and its equipment for free. Having found freedom to express himself through the gift of song-writing, his heart was set to share the facility to help others find that same freedom found in the gift of music.

In early 2006, the first event was organised to raise funds and "grow" something of an unofficial "Free School of Music". As a result, Jam Night was born - a weekly event where musicians give a small donation to come together at Sanctuary Studios and Jam with one another, strangers and friends alike, with all of the funds raised from entry fees going toward providing music tuition and instruments on a free loan, and sometimes donated to those who showed great aptitude.

Occasionally along the way, there were a few private donations from people who were inspired to help us keep the dream alive, in particular, we would like to express our gratitude to Mr Ray Rockley

@www.kenco-techniques.co.uk for his generous support over the years.

To this day, Jam Nights and other fundraising events still take place at Sanctuary Studios, where thousands of hours of studio time have been freely given and hundreds of people have passed through or continue on their musical journey.

In August 2024, the unofficial "Free School of Music" finally reached maturity, to branch out and relaunch as Liberty Music CIC, an official Community Interest Company registered with Companies House, and so the next chapter begins.
